# Food

> Search the food database or scan a barcode, and VitaSync adds up the day's calories and macros.

Pick a food, pick a serving, and VitaSync adds it to the day. Your usual foods come first, so logging them again is quick.

## Add a food

Tap the plus button for quick-add, then Add food. You can also use the Food section on the Log tab. That section shows while you track calories.

**1. Find the food**

Search by name, or tap the scan icon next to the search box. Search starts once you type two characters.

**2. Pick a serving**

Tap the food to review it. Use the servings stepper. The calories and macros change with it.

**3. Check the time and confirm**

The time eaten starts as now. Change it if you ate earlier, then confirm.

To skip the review, tap the plus on a food's row. It adds one serving at the current time.

Search results show values per serving, or per 100 g when a product lists no serving.

## Scan a barcode

Hold the barcode inside the frame. VitaSync looks the product up and opens the same review screen. The camera reads barcodes only. If the lookup fails, you can scan again.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Reading a nutrition label is not built yet. The scanner reads barcodes only.

## Meals

You do not pick a meal first. VitaSync names it from the time you ate: breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack. The day shows as a timeline in time order.

## How the day adds up

The day's calories are the total of the items you logged. Protein, carbs and fat add up the same way. The Food section on Log shows the calorie total, the macro totals and each item.

For foods from the database, the review screen also shows fibre, sugars, saturated fat and salt. VitaSync shows these but does not add them up or keep them.

## Your food library

Save foods you eat often. A custom food has a name, a portion label and macros. VitaSync offers to create one when a search finds nothing. Library foods sit above your recents. Tap the plus to add one serving. Press and hold a food to edit it.

## Recipes

A recipe is a list of ingredients, each with its own servings. Add ingredients from your library, from search or from common foods. A recipe logs as one item, with its macros added together.

## Edit or delete an item

Tap an item on the day's timeline to reopen it. Change the servings or the time, or remove the item.

## What leaves your phone

Searching sends your search term to Open Food Facts, a free food database. Scanning sends the barcode number. Open Food Facts does not receive your log. See [Privacy](/how-it-works/privacy).

## Questions

> **Do I have to log everything I eat?**
>
> No. A half-logged day is fine. The day's calories are the total of what you logged.

> **Does food logging work offline?**
>
> Your recents, your library and common foods work without a connection. Search and barcode lookup need one.

> **What if search can't find my food?**
>
> Create it as a custom food, with a name, a portion label and macros.

> **Can I type a calorie total instead of logging items?**
>
> Yes, on a day with no foods logged. Quick-add and Catch up both take a total. Once you log a food, the day's calories come from your foods instead. Reading food from Health Connect is planned.
