# Restore on a new phone

> Get your backup back after a reinstall or on a new phone.

Restore needs a backup with an email linked. See [Cloud backup](/help/cloud-backup).

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the restore link">
    On a fresh install, the first onboarding screen has a "Restore from backup" link. On a phone already in use, open the menu, then Account.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the notice">
    Restoring is cloud processing too, so the same notice appears first.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your email and code">
    Type the email on the backup and the six-digit code we send.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for the download">
    VitaSync downloads your history first, then resumes normal backups.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Two steps that can fail separately

Signing in and downloading are separate. If the code is accepted but the download stops, VitaSync says so. It does not claim your data is back. Nothing uploads from this phone until the download completes, so a half-restored phone cannot overwrite your backup. Open the app again with a connection and the download finishes.

## If this phone already has data from another account

VitaSync asks before replacing it. Days logged on this phone under a different account are not merged into the backup you are restoring. Days logged before any backup was turned on are kept and merged.
