# Where a value comes from

> How VitaSync decides between what you typed and what Health Connect sent.

Every value on a day carries a tag saying where it came from. A value with no tag is yours. A value from Health Connect or screen time carries the name of that source. The rule is short: what you typed wins.

```mermaid theme={null}
flowchart TD
  v["A value arrives from Health Connect"] --> q{"Did you type a value<br/>for this metric today?"}
  q -- Yes --> keep["Your value stays.<br/>The import is ignored."]
  q -- No --> write["The import is written<br/>and tagged with its source"]
  write --> later{"You edit it later?"}
  later -- Yes --> manual["The tag is removed.<br/>It is yours now."]
  later -- No --> stays["It stays tagged and<br/>refreshes with the source"]
```

## What you see

A tagged value shows a small source badge and is read-only. Edit it and the badge goes. Later imports do not replace a value you edited.

## Disconnecting a source

Disconnect Health Connect under Integrations and VitaSync removes the values it supplied. Values you typed are untouched.

## Tags travel with cloud backup

The tag goes up with the value, and your account merges tags per metric. A value you edited on one phone stays yours after a round trip through your account and onto another phone.

## Sleep from two places

Sleep can come from Health Connect as a session with a start and an end, or from the sleep sheet as a duration. When both exist, the one you typed wins, like any other metric.
