# Money, habits and custom metrics

> Spending, Net Worth, habits, custom metrics and goals: how each is logged and how it adds up.

This page covers what you track beyond the built-in body and mind metrics. Spending and Net Worth are money. Habits are yes or no. Custom metrics are trackers you define. Goals set a target on a metric. In the beta you enter money by hand. Every metric is optional.

| Metric | What it is | Unit and range | How you log it | Fills itself in from |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| Spending | What you spent in the day | Your currency, 0 or more | Add each amount as an entry, or type a total for the day | Nothing |
| Net Worth | What you own minus what you owe, as a snapshot | Your currency. Any number, including a negative one | Type the number in its row when you check it | Nothing |
| Habits | Yes or no things you do each day | Yes or no. A habit can have tasks | Tap the habit. For a habit with tasks, open it and tick each task | Nothing |
| Custom metrics | A tracker you define yourself | A number, a 1–10 scale, yes or no, or short text | Create it under Tracked metrics, then log it on the Log tab | Nothing |
| Goals | A daily or weekly target on a metric | The metric's own unit | Open the menu, then Settings, then Goals | Nothing. VitaSync works out progress from what you log |

## Currency

One currency applies to all your money metrics. The default is GBP. To change it, open the menu, then Settings, then Units & Currency. The choices are GBP, USD, EUR, JPY, AUD and CAD.

VitaSync does not convert amounts. Changing the currency changes the symbol only, so log in your own currency.

## Spending

Spending is timed. Each amount you add is an entry with a time, and the entries add up to the day's total. The button names the amount, like Add £8.50. Remove an entry to correct the total.

You can also type one total for the day, for example in Catch up. A total with no entries behind it shows as "Logged as a total for the day".

In the beta you enter spending by hand. VitaSync does not read your bank. Bank connections are planned. See [What's in the beta](/help/whats-in-the-beta).

## Net Worth

Net Worth is a snapshot, not a flow. It is the value on the day you checked it. You do not log it daily. Weekly or monthly is typical.

* **It can be negative.** VitaSync accepts any number.
* **Gaps are expected.** Charts draw a line between your snapshots. They do not treat the days in between as missing.
* **It saves when you leave the field.** A Save button appears while your number differs from the stored one.

## Habits

A habit is a yes or no for the day. Tap it to mark it done.

Create habits under Settings, then Habits. Turn on Tasks for a habit to give it a checklist. For example, a Morning routine habit could have three tasks.

* **A habit with tasks is done once you tick every task.** Tap the habit to open its tasks in place.
* **Progress shows as a count.** Two of three ticked shows 2/3. It does not count as done, and it does not extend your streak.
* **A habit without tasks stays a single tap.**
* **Past days stay as they were.** Adding tasks to a habit affects the days from then on.

## Custom metrics

Custom metrics let you track something VitaSync does not cover. Open the menu, then Tracked metrics, then Create custom metric. Choose a name and a kind. You can also set a unit and an icon.

| Kind | How you log it | Quick-add |
| - | - | - |
| Number | Type a number. The unit you chose shows beside it | No |
| 1–10 scale | Tap a number on a row of ten | Yes |
| Yes or no | One tap | Yes |
| Short text | One line, up to about 280 characters | No |

* **A custom scale has no good end.** It shows plain cells, with 1 Low and 10 High. Built-in ratings colour their ends. Yours do not.
* **Insights can use numbers, scales and yes or no.** Short text is left out of comparisons.
* **You can rename, reorder and move a custom metric.** Reorder it alongside the built-in metrics on Tracked metrics.
* **Archiving hides a custom metric and keeps its history.** You can restore it later.

## Goals

A goal is a target on one metric. It is daily or weekly. It sets either a number to reach (at least) or a cap to stay under (at most).

Open the menu, then Settings, then Goals, then Add goal. Pick a metric and set the target in its unit. Each metric has a default period and direction, and you can change both. You can have one goal per metric.

| Metric | Unit | Default period | Default direction |
| - | - | - | - |
| Sleep | Hours | Daily | At least |
| Meditation | Minutes | Daily | At least |
| Water | ml | Daily | At least |
| Steps | Steps | Daily | At least |
| Deep Work | Hours | Daily | At least |
| Workouts | Number of workouts | Weekly | At least |
| Calories | kcal | Daily | At most |
| Protein, Carbs and Fat | Grams | Daily | At least |
| Spending | Your currency | Weekly | At most |
| Alcohol | Units | Weekly | At most |
| Screen Time | Hours | Daily | At most |

A weekly goal adds up the week's daily values, Monday to Sunday.

* **Progress shows on Home.** The Your goals card shows the amount so far against the target. A goal is met once you reach an at least target, or stay at or under an at most cap. Going over a cap shows a warning tint.
* **A day with nothing logged reads as not started.** It does not read as failed.
* **A goal never blocks logging.**
* **Goals do not cover Mood, Energy, Stress or custom metrics.**
